Thinking about new windows but not sure where to start? You’re not alone. With such a variety of styles to choose from, it helps to know how each one looks, performs and suits the way you live.
The good news is that there’s a style for every property. Casement windows are a popular choice for modern homes, while sliding sash and flush sash windows bring out the charm of period properties. For flats and upstairs rooms, tilt and turn windows are hard to beat. If you’d like more light and space in a room, a bay or bow window is a great option.
In this guide, we’ll walk you through the main types of double glazed windows we fit, so you can choose with confidence.

The main types of double glazed windows at a glance
At The Nottingham Window Company, every window we fit is made to measure and A-rated as standard, with multi-point locks for peace of mind.
| Style | Best for | Key strength |
| Casement | Most homes | Versatile and cost-effective |
| Sliding sash | Georgian & Victorian homes | Classic period character |
| Flush sash | Period & heritage homes | Timber look without the upkeep |
| Tilt & turn | Flats & upper floors | Easy cleaning, safe ventilation |
| Bay & bow | Front rooms & bedrooms | Extra light and floor space |
Casement windows
Casement windows are the most widely fitted type of window in the UK. Our casement windows open outwards on a hinge at the side, top or bottom, like a small door. When closed, the sash presses firmly against the window frame to keep draughts out.
We fit them in uPVC and aluminium, and their clean, simple shape suits modern homes, 1930s semis and new builds. The wide opening also makes them great for rooms that need plenty of fresh air.

Sliding sash windows
Sliding sash windows are a much-loved feature of Georgian and Victorian homes. Our uPVC sliding sash windows glide up and down smoothly, while traditional details such as horns and Georgian glazing bars keep the look true to the period.
They keep the original character of period homes, including Edwardian properties, while adding the warmth and energy efficiency of modern double glazing. The sashes also tilt inwards, so you can clean the outside glass from indoors.

Flush sash windows
If you love the look of traditional timber windows but not the upkeep, our flush sash windows are a great option.
Their flush design means the sash sits perfectly flat within the frame, just like classic timber joinery. For an even more authentic finish, our Residence 7 and Residence 9 windows are designed to recreate 19th-century timber windows and carry an A+ energy rating.
That makes our timber alternative windows a lovely fit for period properties and stone cottages, where you want a traditional look without the sanding and painting.

Tilt and turn windows
Our tilt and turn windows give you two ways to open one window. In tilt mode, the top leans inwards to let fresh air in safely. In turn mode, the whole window swings inwards like a door, so cleaning the outside is simple.
Because you never need to lean out to clean them, they’re an ideal option for flats, upstairs bedrooms and rooms with small balconies.

Bay and bow windows
A bay window juts out from the wall with angled sides. A bow window forms a gentle curve using more panes of glass. We can create classic bays using our casement and flush sash windows, giving you wider views, more natural light and a little extra room inside.

Glass options and energy ratings
Windows carry energy ratings just like your fridge, and every window we fit is A-rated as standard. According to the Energy Saving Trust, A-rated double glazing in a semi-detached house in Great Britain could save around £85 a year on energy bills.
For even greater energy savings, we also offer triple glazing, along with acoustic glass to reduce noise pollution and privacy glass for bathrooms.
Choosing your frame material
When it comes to frame materials, our windows come in uPVC or aluminium. uPVC windows are affordable and easy to look after, and they won’t warp, crack or split. Aluminium windows have slimmer frames and bigger glass panes, making them ideal if you’d like a sleek, contemporary look.

Frequently asked questions
Are double glazed windows energy efficient?
Yes. Double glazing traps warmth inside and stops cold air getting in, cutting heat loss and keeping your energy bills lower. We also offer triple glazing if you’d like even better results.
Can I upgrade my existing sash windows?
Absolutely. Our uPVC sliding sash windows look just like traditional timber ones. You keep the character of your home but gain a warmer, more secure window that needs very little looking after.
How do I choose the right double glazing?
Think about your home’s style, your budget and what matters most to you, such as warmth or noise reduction. We’d also recommend seeing the windows in person at our Hucknall showroom.
