Windows have a vital role to play when it comes to the energy efficiency of your home. Yet, they can be the greatest source of unwanted heat loss. Aged, worn windows can make your home feel uninviting, unhomely, and cold, plus you will definitely notice the soaring price of your energy bills! The reason this happens to older windows is due to the fact they are not double glazed. Double glazing may seem like a normal thing to have nowadays, however, 20 years ago only 51% of houses in the UK had double glazing. But, thanks to building regulations, more than 80% of homes now have double-glazed windows.

So, you may be wondering what exactly is double glazing and how does it work? As double-glazing experts, we have the answer for you below!

What is double glazing?

A double-glazed window features two panes of glass-enclosed within a sealed unit. The two pieces of glass are separated by a gap of at least 12mm and can be filled with either air or argon gas. Although glass is a practical material for windows, as it lets swathes of natural light in and allows you to clearly view the outside, glass is actually a good heat conductor – meaning heat would transfer straight through the window if it wasn’t for the double glazing.

How does double glazing work?

The air or gas-filled gap insulates against heat transfer between the different temperatures, inside and outside. Acting as a break, the air cannot circulate; therefore, slowing down the movement of heat and reducing heat loss.

Argon gas’ thermal conductivity is approximately 67% lower than air, which helps lower the U-value of double-glazed windows further. Argon gas is colourless, odourless gas, and is completely harmless. Air-filled windows are purely windows filled with air. They are the more cost-effective option, and though they do offer a certain level of thermal efficiency, argon-filled windows are a better investment for lasting performance.
